Pornpawee, doubles stars march on

Dechapol, Sapsiree seal last eight berth

Pornpawee Chochuwong overcame Supanida Katethong to reach the quarter-finals of the US$420,000 Toyota Gazoo Racing Thailand Open at Hua Mark Indoor Stadium yesterday.

Eighth seed Pornpawee survived a tough test against her Thai compatriot, winning their last-16 match 21-11, 14-21, 21-15.

Pornpawee will play Chinese third seed He Bingjiao, who beat India’s Saina Nehwal 21-11, 21-14, in the last eight of the BWF World Tour Super 500 event today.

Earlier, mixed doubles pair Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai also claimed their berth in the quarter-finals.

The Thai top seeds, winners of the 2021 tournament, defeated Adnan Maulana and Nita Violina Marwah of Indonesia 21-16, 21-11 in the last 16 yesterday.

The world No.2 pair, who claimed their first title of the year at the Malaysia Masters on Sunday, will play sixth seeds Robin Tabeling and Selena Piek in the quarter-finals today.

The Dutch duo defeated Denmark’s Mathias Thyrri and Amalie Magelund 21-16, 21-15.

In the women’s doubles, fourth seeds Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai beat Maiken Fruergaard and Sara Thygesen of Denmark 21-12, 21-11.

Sixth seeds Benyapa Aimsaard and Nuntakarn Aimsaard also sealed their place in the last eight with a 21-18, 21-19 win over Li Wenmei and Liu Xuanxuan of China.

They will play Japan’s Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi in the quarter-finals.

Kantaphon Wangcharoen was due to meet fifth seed Lu Guangxu of China while second seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn was to play Chico Aura DWI Wardoyo of Indonesia.

It was a bad day for seeded players in the men’s singles event.

Top seed Chou Tien-chen of Taiwan bowed out after losing to Ng Tze Yong of Malaysia 21-23, 21-23 while sixth seed Angus Ng Ka Long of Hong Kong was sent packing by Toma Junior Popov of France in a 17-21, 20-22 loss.

In women’s event, top seed An SeYoung of South Korea cruised past Hsu Wen-chi of Taiwan 21-14, 21-12 while Spain’s fourth seed Carolina Marin came through her match against Ashmita Chaliha of India 21-18, 21-13.

However sixth seed Wang Zhiyi of China crashed out after losing to Canada’s Michelle Li 20-22, 17-21.

Ratchanok Intanon made a shock exit in the women’s singles first round on Wednesday. The fifth seed lost to China’s Gao Fangjie 21-12, 17-21, 19-21.

However Gao’s progress ended yesterday after she lost to Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark 13-21, 14-21.
