Poems come to life at The Peninsula

The Peninsula Bangkok is holding “Poetic License”, a visual poetry exhibition by celebrated Thai poet and cultural historian Chiranan Pitpreecha, at its gallery space and public areas starting tomorrow until July 30.

Hotel guests and visitors are invited to explore the intersection of poetry and visual arts that reflect the artist’s belief that we should break with conventions in pursuit of an earnest message. Recurring themes in these poems relate to humans’ relationship with nature and the preservation of our environment.

Viewers will engage with subjects that have informed her decades-long writing career — the human searching for freedom, and the powerful-yet-threatened beauty of the natural world.

The exhibition will see her poems appear transposed onto painted works of art created by Adisak Somkong, an independent artist.

They include Unity In Diversity, which features deep-blue abstract patterns punctuated by bursts of light to evoke the swirling waters of the Chao Phraya River as well as the perpetual flow of life; and Golden Silk that incorporates fine golden threads, like those spun by a caterpillar for its cocoon, to illustrate the sanctity and beauty of utilising what nature gives to us freely.

Worship The Nature is an expansive art installation inspired by the role bodhi trees play in Thai culture. This work of art asks us to consider the role of worship in our relationship with the environment within us and around us.

Also available will be Zumo Book, a limited edition of a bound 20-page collection of original poems by Chiranan that probe the themes of personal freedom and perpetual change.

The book is priced at 20,000 baht and only 20 copies will be available. Proceeds will be donated to Sati, a grassroots non-profit foundation, providing scholarships for underprivileged or at-risk youth in Thailand.

The Peninsula Bangkok is on Charoen Nakhon Road.
