Blue Jays slip past Boston in 9th inning

TORONTO: Vladimir Guerrero Jr capped a two-run ninth inning with a walk-off single as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the visiting Boston Red Sox 6-5 on Tuesday.

Pinch hitter Alejandro Kirk singled to lead off the bottom of the ninth against Tyler Danish (2-1), and George Springer walked. Hansel Robles replaced Danish and allowed Bo Bichette’s single that scored pinch runner Bradley Zimmer to tie the game to set up Guerrero’s winning hit.

Jordan Romano (2-2) pitched around a walk in the top of the ninth. Toronto starter Ross Stripling allowed two runs in five innings, while Boston’s Michael Wacha gave up four runs in five innings.

Rob Refsnyder hit a two-run home run and Trevor Story added a solo shot for the Red Sox, who have lost the first two games of the three-game series.

Framber Valdez tossed eight shutout innings and Yordan Alvarez, Yuli Gurriel and Kyle Tucker homered as visiting Houston pummelled New York 9-1.

Alvarez had three hits and reached base five times for Houston, and Alex Bregman also contributed three hits. Valdez (8-3) allowed six hits, walked two and struck out five as the Astros won for the sixth time in eight games.

New York’s Starling Marte had three hits, including two doubles. Carlos Carrasco (8-4) yielded six runs in 4 1/3 innings as the Mets lost for just the third time in their past 16 home games.

Jesse Winker hit a tie-breaking, tworun double with two outs in the eighth inning as Seattle beat visiting Baltimore 2-0.

With two outs in the decisive eighth, JP Crawford lined a single off Cionel Perez (4-1). Felix Bautista came on to face Julio Rodriguez, who hit a onehopper off the pitcher’s leg and beat a diving tag attempt by first baseman Ryan Mountcastle. Winker then hit a deep drive to right, scoring both runners.

Diego Castillo (5-1) pitched the eighth and Paul Sewald worked the ninth for his seventh save to wrap up Seattle’s one-hitter. The Orioles’ lone hit was a fourth-inning, line-drive single to right field by Mountcastle off Mariners starter Robbie Ray, who threw seven sharp innings.
