Students upset over renovations

POST REPORTERS

Bangpakok Wittayakom School is allowing students to keep studying online for a month after it came under fire for some half-finished renovation work that has left it looking like a construction site.

Students at the school in Bangkok’s Rat Burana district protested after they turned up on their first day of the new term on Tuesday only to find dusty classrooms and school grounds, faulty air-conditioners and computers, and a shortage of food in the canteen.

The complaints were aired on social media along with pictures of the renovations in progress.

The students complained about the construction work while demanding the school director take immediate action to restore a safe and clean learning environment.

One student said on social media that she and her peers were disappointed to find the school in a state of disarray. Any renovations should have been completed during the two years of the Covid-19 pandemic, she said.

She said only three food stalls were open at the canteen, meaning there was not enough food to go around for the 1,000 primary and secondary students who attend the school.

The thick dust posed a health hazard and the building equipment could injure students, she claimed, adding the girls’ toilets were also out of order.

The student said some of her peers had each paid 18,000 baht to attend a special study programme at the staterun school.

Niyom Paisopha, director of the Secondary Educational Service Area Office 1, said after discussing the problem with the school and builder, the office decided to let the students study online or via other methods for a month.

Mr Niyom said he has instructed the builder to speed up the work and clean up the site regularly to prevent dust pollution.
