No place for bias

Re: “Rittenhouse Rules”, (cartoon, Nov 27), “Rittenhouse and the Right’s white vigilante heroes”, (Opinion, Nov 27), and “American chaos”, (PostBag, Nov 27).

The biased reporting on the whole Rittenhouse case in the US is bad enough. But to have to read the very biased reporting in the Bangkok Post is disappointing. First of all, the Rittenhouse case had nothing to do with the KKK. It also had nothing to do with “valorising white vigilantes who use violence against people of colour and their white allies” both of which Mr Blow asserts. Mr Rittenhouse was white, all three of the people who attacked him, beat him, kicked him, pointed a loaded weapon at him, and were eventually shot were also white.

The letter written by Observer notes that “it is not acceptable for a teenager — or anybody — to bring an assault rifle, or any lethal weapon, to a political protest”, and misses the point of the whole trial. Over 50 million dollars in damage was done in Kenosha, Wisconsin by the rioters. Forty buildings were destroyed and more than 100 damaged. The Kenosha rioters were not “peaceful protesters”.

The cartoon asserts Mr Rittenhouse “pretended he was some kind of a policeman”. He was, in fact, there to treat wounded people which he had been doing that very evening. He was there to try to clean up the mess the rioters had caused in his town of Kenosha. He never ever claimed he was there to be a policeman nor did he unapologetically shoot anyone on the street. He had to defend his life. Unfortunately for Observer, CNN won’t tell you any of that either.

Reading the three different items in the Bangkok Post on Saturday gave a biased view of the reality of what happened. Wouldn’t it be better to actually report on what really happened instead of giving a biased one-sided commentary? Come on, Bangkok Post, you can do better.
